Lugano is a wealthy, young city with a comprehensive, modern infrastructure and a diversity of cultural amenities the whole year round. However, Lugano tends to be rather a (very upmarket) residential location and the economy plays a more important role than tourism; today Lugano is the third-largest banking and trading centre of Switzerland and a few years ago also became a modern and proud university city.

Lugano is easily reached by Intercity, motorway and by plane. Agno airport is 4 km, Milan-Malpensa airport 45 km and the golf course in Magliaso 6 km away.

The district of Lugano-Garaverio is close to Barbengo and faces south-west. Barbengo is a little off the beaten track, and yet you can quickly reach Lugano (7 km) or the motorway (5 km) or the large shopping center near Noranco (4 km). The lakeshore is in front of the door, and long hiking trails lead to the Collina d’Oro or to Morcote, always along the gentle slopes through chestnut forests and past vineyards. There are restaurants, as well as a kindergarten and a middle school, which are within walking distance.
