Montagnola, well-known through Hermann Hesse, who lived there, is located on the southern border Lugano, located slightly higher on the sunny slopes of the Collina d’Oro.  Originally the western slope was known as the Collina d’Oro  - the golden hill – which stretches from this higher-lying, historic centre of Montagnola to Lake Lugano with the district of Montagnola Lago. Today the community of Montagnola is combined with Montagnola Lago, Carabietta, Gentilino and Agra to form a district under the name of Collina d’Oro.

Montagnola Lago is an elongated village by Lake Lugano, located on the lakeside road between Morcote and Agno. The former fishing and winegrowing village has changed today into a residential area since Lugano is not far away. Here one can live peacefully in the sun thanks to the southwest-facing position; the slopes that at first only rise gently above the Lake afford a romantic and distant view of Lake Lugano.
